How this calculator works
A washer uses electricity for the motor, controls, and—in some models—internal water heating. The most reliable energy input is the kWh per cycle listed on an EnergyGuide label or measured with a compatible meter.
This estimate covers washer electricity only. Heating household water and drying the clothes can cost more than the wash cycle itself, especially when hot water and an electric dryer are used.
At 0.30 kWh per load, six loads per week, and $0.18/kWh, washer electricity costs about $0.05 per load and $1.40 per month.
How to get a more accurate estimate
- Use the Normal or Eco cycle kWh rather than the machine’s maximum wattage.
- Compare cold-water and hot-water routines separately.
- Use your actual weekly load count; small, frequent loads can increase energy per pound of laundry.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include the cost of hot water?
No. This calculator covers electricity used by the washer. Add water-heating cost separately if the cycle draws hot water from the home system.
Why is wattage not the main input?
Washer power changes during filling, tumbling, spinning, and pauses. Energy per complete cycle is usually a better input than peak watts.
Do cold cycles save electricity?
They usually reduce water-heating energy, which may be the largest energy component of a warm or hot wash.
