Formula: EV: miles × kWh/100 mi ÷ charging efficiency × electric rate; gas: miles ÷ MPG × gas price

How this calculator works

The EV calculation adjusts vehicle energy consumption for charging losses between the wall and battery. The gasoline calculation divides miles by MPG and multiplies by fuel price.

This is an energy-only comparison. Purchase price, depreciation, insurance, maintenance, public fast-charging premiums, taxes, registration, and financing are excluded.

Example

At 1,000 miles per month, 30 kWh/100 miles, 90% charging efficiency, and $0.18/kWh, home charging costs about $60. A 30 MPG vehicle at $3.50/gallon costs about $116.67.

How to get a more accurate estimate

  1. Use wall-to-wheel charging energy when available.
  2. Use real seasonal EV efficiency and real-world MPG.
  3. Separate home, workplace, and public charging prices when your mix changes.

Frequently asked questions

Why include charging efficiency?

The electricity drawn from the wall is greater than the energy stored in the battery because charging has losses.

Does cold weather affect EV cost?

Cabin heating, battery conditioning, and efficiency changes can raise kWh per mile.

Does this prove which car is cheaper overall?

No. It compares electricity and gasoline energy cost only.

Planning estimate

Results use the values you enter and the formula shown above. Real bills can include taxes, minimum charges, tiers, time-of-use pricing, cycling losses, and other adjustments. Use a recent bill or a plug-in energy meter when accuracy matters.
