How this calculator works
Total shower cost combines metered water and sewer charges with energy used to heat the hot-water portion. The calculator assumes approximately a 60°F temperature rise and an electric water heater.
Groundwater temperature, shower temperature, heater type, distribution losses, sewer billing, and actual flow can change the result.
A 2.0 gpm shower lasting eight minutes uses 16 gallons. Two showers per day use about 960 gallons per 30-day month.
How to get a more accurate estimate
- Measure flow by timing how long it takes to fill a known container.

- Shorter showers and lower-flow fixtures reduce both water and water-heating demand.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work for a gas water heater?
The built-in energy estimate uses electricity. For gas, calculate fuel use with the natural-gas tool and the heater efficiency.
Why estimate hot-water share?
The shower mixes hot and cold water; only the hot portion must be heated by the home system.
Does flow equal the showerhead label?
Pressure, restrictions, and fixture condition can change actual flow, so measurement is better.
