Audit in four passes

- Classify. Mark each as essential continuous, schedule-dependent, unnecessary, or unknown.

Loads commonly missed
Modems, routers, mesh nodes, set-top boxes, audio equipment, printers, garage-door openers, irrigation controllers, smart-home hubs, doorbells, security systems, uninterruptible power supplies, chargers, adjustable furniture, and appliance electronics may remain energized. Some are essential or intentionally connected. The audit asks whether the service is needed continuously and whether a lower-power configuration exists.
Measurement pitfalls
Very low power can challenge inexpensive meters. Devices also wake periodically for updates, defrosting, network checks, charging, or maintenance. Measure long enough to capture those events. Do not measure high-current, 240-volt, hardwired, wet-location, heating, or motor loads with an incompatible plug meter.
Prioritize by annual impact
Chasing a 0.3-watt charger may save less than correcting one 20-watt unused system. Rank findings by annual kWh, ease, risk, and impact on service. A controlled power strip can be useful for a group of entertainment accessories, while a timer may suit noncritical seasonal equipment. Neither is appropriate for every device.
Before disconnecting anything
- Check medical, safety, smoke/CO alarm, security, communications, and accessibility roles.
- Understand firmware updates, recordings, backups, clocks, remote access, and restart behavior.
- Do not interrupt refrigerators, sump pumps, leak detectors, aquariums, network-dependent safety devices, or other critical loads.
- Follow manufacturer shutdown instructions and never defeat grounding or protective devices.

An audit finds 9 watts of unused audio equipment, 6 watts of legacy network gear, and 4 watts across redundant adapters. If a required network replacement costs $150 solely to save 6 watts, energy-only simple payback exceeds 15 years; configuration changes may be more sensible.
Check the bill honestly
A 166-kWh annual reduction averages only 13.9 kWh monthly. Weather and larger loads can mask it on a whole-home bill. Use interval data or a stable multi-week comparison, normalize for major changes, and avoid declaring success from one bill.
